SMHCC Champions Sustainability with Tela Tales Program and Sustainable Diner Initiative

SM Hotels and Conventions Corp. (SMHCC) commemorated World Recycling Day with the launch of Tela Tales, a pioneering program advocating for environmental responsibility. The program centers around creating a circular economy for used linens, aiming to empower communities and promote a sustainable future.

During a media briefing and exhibit entitled “SMHCC Road to Zero,” Leah Magallanes, SMHCC’s Vice President for Quality and Sustainability, outlined the company’s comprehensive sustainability strategy. This strategy is anchored on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices, with measurable goals like achieving Zero Waste, Zero Greenwashing, and Zero Biases.

    SM Hotels and Conventions Corp.

SM Hotels and Conventions Corp. (SMHCC) is taking significant strides towards a more sustainable future for the tourism industry in the Philippines. The company is implementing a 4-step approach resulting to 40% aggregated energy reduction per guest (from 2019).

    • Energy Conservation

SMHCC has transformed its hotel rooms into smart spaces equipped with intelligent features that prioritize energy savings. These rooms are equipped with motion sensors that automatically shut off air conditioners when no movement is detected, eliminating unnecessary energy consumption. Additionally, LED bulbs and inverter air conditioners with optimized temperature settings further contribute to reduced energy usage.

    • Water Management

Since 2019, SMHCC has successfully recycled over 414,789 cubic meters of water through its commitment to water conservation. Notably, Pico de Loro utilizes a desalination plant, a testament to the company’s dedication to innovative solutions for water management.
    • Green Procurement

SMHCC prioritizes partnering with suppliers who share their commitment to sustainability. They maintain a green chain supplier directory to facilitate collaboration with environmentally conscious businesses. Furthermore, the company actively supports over 1,637 MSMEs that offer local and “glocal cuisine”, featuring global dishes prepared with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. This approach not only reduces the hotel’s carbon footprint but also empowers local communities.

    • Waste Management

SMHCC champions a circular economy by implementing initiatives that divert food waste from landfills. Through these efforts, the company has successfully diverted over 11,000 kilograms of food waste. These initiatives promote resource recovery and contribute to a more sustainable waste management system.

The event showcased SMHCC’s successful sustainability projects in collaboration with key partners:

    • Hope Water, Diversey Philippines, Greenspace PH, and Green Trident Services: Over Php300,000 was contributed to build classrooms while diverting more than 7,100 kilograms of plastic waste since 2022.

    • Diverted Resources: More than 253 kilograms of used bar soaps were converted into new ones; 198,640 kilograms of food waste were composted using the bokashi method; over 10,000 kilograms of paper and 2,000 kilograms of plastic waste were repurposed into sustainable products like Papel ni Juan recycled paper and Poly al Eco Boards.

    • Taal Vista Hotel’s Biodigester Success: The installation of Dunbrae Philippines’ Orca Biodigester in July 2023 effectively diverted 11,672 kilograms of food waste.

Tela Tales: Transforming Lives, One Textile at a Time

The event’s highlight was the official launch of Tela Tales alongside social entrepreneur Zarah Juan. This program uplifts communities by transforming used linens into fashionable and sustainable bags for resale, offering women a sustainable source of income. Inspired by the motto “Transforming lives, one textile at a time,” Tela Tales empowers communities and fosters a circular economy.

Plate for the Planet: Sustainable Dining

Following the launch was a delectable lunch program called “Plate for the Planet.” Curated by Taal Vista Hotel’s culinary experts, the menu featured locally sourced and hotel-harvested ingredients. This program exemplifies SMHCC’s commitment to a circular economy within its operations. Food scraps are composted for gardening and farming, producing vegetables, herbs, and fruits used in the hotels themselves. Ultimately, “Plate for the Planet” aims to expand healthy and eco-friendly dining options, reducing food waste and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.

“The launch of Tela Tales, complemented by ‘Plate for the Planet,’ marks a significant milestone in SMHCC’s sustainability journey,” shared Ms. Magallanes. “It embodies our unwavering dedication to progress, one linen and one plate at a time.“

Beyond Tela Tales and “Plate for the Planet,” SMHCC’s sustainability efforts encompass various aspects.

SMHCC promotes diversity and inclusion, with 49% female executives, 48% female senior managers, and 88 women in traditionally male-dominated roles. Additionally, 60% of employees have enhanced their skills through training programs.

SM Hotel and Convention Corp.’s dedication to sustainability sets a commendable example for the tourism industry in the Philippines. By implementing these innovative practices, the company is creating a more positive environmental impact and paving the way for a greener future for tourism.
