Grab Philippines bolsters its efforts to boost confidence among women driver- and deliver-partners through a capacity-building program that enhances key competencies in the industry.
Through active discussions with women driver leaders and women driver communities, Grab Philippines found out that among the reasons why women feel discouraged from pursuing a career in transportation and deliveries include the mindset that it’s not suitable for women. Additionally, many women face the lack of confidence in handling situations like irate passengers, vehicle breakdowns, and safety.
Addressing this, super app Grab strengthened its partnership with organizations including he Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), Philippine Red Cross (PRC), and the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) to implement a comprehensive capacity-building program for female drivers.
Among the training sessions attended by Grab women drivers include safe spaces with PCW where they were taught about the Safe Spaces Act and how it protects women.
“Efforts such as this lunch and learn session by Grab are critical in making sure that more Filipinas know what the Safe Spaces Act is, and how they can co-create harassment-free and discrimination-free environments,” said PCW speaker Danielle Alexandria Anteola.
For its part, Grab has rolled out app features that protect women driver-partners and delivery-partners.
These include a feature that allows women Grab drivers to prioritize matching with female passengers, an emergency assistance button that gives easy access to law enforcement in case of emergency situations, trip monitoring which enables Grab to track atypical stops and routing made by driver-partners, and live location sharing that can be shared to loved ones so they can monitor an ongoing ride location.
“The digital economy brings viable opportunities for everyone, intensifying the hope and capability of our kababayans to attain their aspirations. As a leader in ride-hailing and on-demand deliveries, we aim to lift more Filipinos to help them capitalize on these opportunities. Every Filipino wanting to better their life should be able to do so without doubts about their safety, skills, or even fears of gender-based discrimination. These are barriers that we relentlessly try to break down at Grab – for every Ate wishing to join our platform,” said Grab Philippines Head of Operations CJ Lacsican.
