INTERNATIONAL Masters Angelo Young from the US and Joel Pimentel from Bacolod City will flag the Asenso Misamis Occidental National Open Chess Tournament scheduled for July 8-9 at the City Auditorium in Ozamiz.
In celebration of Ozamiz City’s 75th Charter Day, the two-day event was bankrolled by sports-loving Misamis Occidental Governor Henry S. Oaminal Sr.; Congressman Sancho Fernando F. Oaminal.
Asia’s first ever Grandmaster and World Chess Hall of Famer Eugene Torre has been invited to spice up the cash-rich tourney as he will hold simultaneous display or exhibition matches against selected homegrown youngsters at the City Auditorium in Ozamiz.
Aside from Torre’s impressive appearance, AGM organizer Rey Urbiztondo said he is also expecting Manila-based IMs Ronald Bancod and Rolando Nolte as well as FIDE Master Christopher Castellano and the newly minted Arena Grandmaster. Lyndon Lumancas who will compete for a total prize money of P200,000. .

“For now now, we’re on 230 entries with 100 the visitor and 130 on Based in Misamis Occidental in our online registration, however there are more manual list on participants which we expect,” said Urbiztondo Gold Star Daily.
Urbiztondo expressed his gratitude to Misamis Oriental Governor Peter M. Unabia and his Provincial Sports Coordinator Francis Sean Condeza for agreeing to the invitation of the organizer Misamis Occidental Federated Chess Association.
The 73rd Charter Day Inter-Agency Chess Team Championship in Cagayan de Oro will be led by top non-master Johnnel Balquin, Lorenzo Cuizon, and Arian Belly Calido from Mindanao.
Ozamiz Chessfest will also receive the full support of Golden Chess Friends in Cagayan de Oro.
“Yes, we come there not only to compete but to build unity and develop friendship with our fellow chess players in Misamis Occidental,” said Benoni Wabe, founding head of the Golden Chess Friends (GCF) who regularly hold monthly chess events in Cagayan de Oro for the development of promising youth in Mindanao.
Arena Grandmaster Urbiztondo, who is a board director of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, said that attractive cash prizes also await the high school and elementary school categories in the Ozamiz rapid tourney which will be administered by former NCFP official Atty. Cliburn Anthony Orbe.
