The pride of Misamis Oriental, Janry Ubas, made a quick follow-up to his gold medal win at the 2023 Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia.
The 29-year-old Ubas from the town of Villanueva ended two successful campaigns abroad after he took the long jump gold at SEAG Cambodia with an impressive 7.85 meters record.
In Lappeenranta, Finland, Ubas took a victory and a tournament-best 7.86m at the Motonet Grand Prix held a few weeks ago.

On Saturday, July 22 (Sunday in Manila), Ubas duplicated his golden effort after dominating the Triveneto Meeting Internazionale in Trieste, Italy.
The consecutive title runs thus, strengthening Ubas’ desire to claim a world championship place, highlighted by his latest jump of 7.72 meters to dominate the 14-player field, beating Cuba’s Lester Lescay Gay.
Lescay Gay, a veteran of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, registered 7.71m for the silver medal, while Thapelo Monaiwa of Botswana posted 7.54m for the bronze.

Ranked 53rd in the world, Ubas’ exploits in Finland and Italy are expected to boost his ranking as only the top 36 athletes will qualify for the world championships scheduled for August 19 to 27 in Budapest, Hungary.
Before leaving for Finland, Ubas went back to Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.
His girlfriend, Mylyn Lumod, accompanied him to Cagayan de Oro where he was feted during the regular flag-raising ceremony at the Provincial Capitol, last Monday, to honor the province and the country.
Governor Peter Unabia, through the Provincial Sports Development Office led by Francis Sean Condeza, also ordered his Admin Staff to conduct a P35,000 check as a bonus for Ubas’ heroic performance.
