The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has pledged its commitment to the 2023 energy initiatives of President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., as stated in his recent State of the Nation Address (SONA). NGCP has pledged to concentrate all available resources towards the completion of ongoing transmission projects while accelerating others in the pipeline.
Recognizing the importance of increasing the presence of renewable energy in the country’s energy mix, NGCP will use its strategic partnership with the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC). By leveraging SGCC’s expertise in renewable energy integration, NGCP hopes to strengthen its capabilities to accelerate the transition to renewable and sustainable energy sources. The collaboration with SGCC allows NGCP to accommodate the increasing adoption of renewable energy technologies into the national grid.
NGCP also prioritized the development of disaster-resilience in the grid infrastructure. They promised to intensify the ongoing and continuous upgrading of its equipment and people, especially those that can prevent disruptions, or provide better repair, in case of natural disasters. Currently, NGCP is developing local talent by investing in world-class training and scholarships for aspiring Filipino engineers.
“We agree with the President’s sentiments. Even before the SONA, the NGCP was already working for the vision that he mentioned,” said Anthony Almeda, President and CEO of the NGCP. “After hearing this from him – his vision that is completely compatible with ours – we know that we are on the right path and we are more motivated to complete all our goals quickly,” he explained.
Among the top priorities on the agenda of the NGCP is the speedy completion of the Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection Project (MVIP) and Stage 3 of the Cebu-Negros-Panay Interconnection Project (CNP3). These two important projects are partially energized, with MVIP on track to be fully energized to 450MW in the third quarter of this year. In order to expedite these projects, the NGCP calls on all Local Government Units to provide essential support by immediately granting the relevant permits and providing the necessary assistance to resolve the right-of-way issues that hinder the smooth implementation of these projects. “We reiterate our call for what the president calls a ‘coherent, centralized, and systematic approach’ to planning, including for energy for stability, stability, and independence. We echo the President’s observation that as long as the national goals are attainable, ‘it will not only require the work of one person or a branch of the government or even the entire government acting alone, but the collective effort that can only be achieved by all Filipinos working together,’ ” Almeda concluded.
